I was born and raised in Alaska where I spent much of my childhood catching frogs and picking wildflowers. I had a little book to identify flowers that bloomed throughout the short summers. I am continually awed by the biological world and how different organisms have evolved, whether I am doing fieldwork, spending time in my studio, or doing research in a plant systematics lab. I received my M.S. in Botany and am now managing a carnivorous plant farm on the Gulf Coast, which you can read about on my
blog. I am hopeful this education and experience will aid me in my adventure to become a scientific illustrator. It is strange and sometimes difficult to pull my brain in two directions, one in art and one in science, but someday I hope to find a balance.
Thank you for looking,
Kate Halpin
